Today I went to GC Monrepos golf course for visit of the golf club Demo day, held by Golfhouse, showing the latest clubs and innovations from Ping, Callaway, Cobra and all the other big brands.
Due to the fact that I felt a bit uncomfy with my Dunlop DDH putter I decided to use the opportunity for a 10% “Demo day discount” and to buy a new putter.
Already took a look at the local Golfhouse store here in Stuttgart for a putter and was already thinking about to buy the Ping Redwood Answer Putter which is played at the moment also by Martin Kaymer.
This putter is a blade putter, a build I played now for more than 17 months.
So, I went today to the Ping guys, asking for fitting me this kind of club. At the booth the salesguy, after telling him what I want, a blade putter where this gadget was mounted on:
After 5 putts the corresponding iPhone app showed that a blade putter wouldn’t be a good choice – so I was asked to test a mallet putter by Ping, also doing 5 putts in a row.
Result: Mallet putter works much better for me (good to know…) and mallet putter should it be.
Meanwhile my buddy Yogi, also in need of getting a new putter, was already done. He did it a different way – he asked “our pro” Thilo, who suggested him to try the ODESSEY Backstryke Marxman. According to Yogi it took him less than 10 minutes to make a decision to buy the 35” version.
Watching me testing the 2 different Ping mallet putters Yogi came over, handed me the demo club of the Backstryke Marxman – and it felt like I found what I was looking for… so, the Backstryke Marxman should it be.
ODESSEY quotes Arnold Palmer and Dave “The Putting God” Pelz as follows:
“This putter is so good, I might just have t back on Tour”
”If I had this putter 30 years ago, just think what it would have done for my game.” – Arnold Palmer“The BackStryke 2-Ball model is the best alignment putter I’ve ever seen.” – Dave Pelz
The product video looks actually quite nice…
Some technical details of my upcoming new putter are…
Loft | Lie | Length |
3° | 69° | 35 ‘’ |
According to Golfdigest.com, where this putter was not a Hot List Winner back in 2010, the club got following characteristics:
• Clear sight line allows the golfer to clearly see if the face is square to the target line without the shaft impeding the line of sight
• Provides an unprecedented visual aid in lining up putts for precision accuracy
• Mallet-style putter creates a unique balance and elegant look
• Multi-layer insert has been fine-tuned to enhance sound, responsiveness, resiliency and consistency
• The inner core is 19.6% firmer to enhance the feel and 92% stiffer for better resiliency, leading to consistent distance control
• The rough texture also helps increase friction between the ball and the insert to promote forward roll
• In-line axis promotes a fluid, stable stroke path that is more consistent, accurate, and leads to better distance control
• Forward press stabilization allows the golfer to use a hands-forward position without de-lofting the putter head
• Promotes a slightly upward stroke into the ball and encourages a longer and lower follow through for better consistency
So, let’s see if my game really improves on the green – sometimes it is really only a new club which is necessary to improve, isn’t it?
