Again, my “Friday hunting day” wasn’t crowned with success… maybe I should have known it already while I was standing on the driving range, hitting +60 balls for a little warm-up and recognised that less than 10% of the hits were good enough to be called “golf shot”.
The tournament itself started also a bit crappy... Hole #1, a par 5, wasn't really a good way to start with +10 strokes / +3 putts. On the other, hole #5 was “my hole” this day. It’s a 154mtr PAR 3, uphill – and the tee shot was a good one, around 25mtr from the pin.

If you take a closer look at the scorecard summary you will notice that the score after all isn’t that bad if you keep in mind that I had 5 penalty strokes. Blame the windy conditions (trust me – there were quite heavy blasts going on… even the HCP 14, guy who was in my threesome, had some difficulties).
So, I scored after all a total of 32 Stableford points (the 14 points I played plus the “automatic 18 points” you get for playing only 9 hole tournaments). If I wouldn’t have had the 5 penalties the score would be 37 – meaning that I not only would have played my official handicap but also that my handicap would have improved from 43 to 42…
After the round the HCP 14 guy gave me a nice resumee about my game. According to him there is lots of potential in my game – the only thing I have to work on (from his point of view) is to get more calm when I hit, being more “relaxed and free” because the shots aren’t that bad when I was in the right “condition”. Even the marshall of the club, who observed our game, came at the end to me and told me that the game wasn’t that bad – except that some shots were really terrible scattered…
So, what’s the conclusion so far? Never give up – even if the first holes are crap, at the end the total score counts. And next time I should maybe really go 2, 3 days for practice before I start the tournament round ;-)
