I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.
Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

promoting a blog

Admit it:
Everyone, who's writing a travel / photo / private / what-ever-blog wants, some day, some traffic / visitors – right?
Otherwise you wouldn't publish / create public articles but you would just have your blog offline either on your own hard disk or written on the good ol' piece of paper.

That's the reason why I tried out Triond (which, from my point of view, sux coz you have to write each and every article / blog-post twice - 1x for your own blog, and then for Triond again. MIGHT BE that I don't understand how Triond works… but hey – maybe YOU could give me a real instruction?) and really using Yahoo's MyBlogLog service (which I think is great – mostly coz it's much much easier than Triond).

Not to ignore such "classic services" like FeedBurner , Technorati and all the others which are more or less working the same way but have different "target groups".

Now I found a new service: BloggersBase , which works similar like Triond – but with the advantage of RSS-feed posting.
That gives me not only the option that my blog(s) might get read by more people but also, thanks to the RSS option, I only have to write the post once – in my blog itself and BloggersBase is getting the post via RSS.

Let's play a little bit around with BloggersBase and see what happens – maybe it's really better then Triond as I understand it at the moment…

Freitag bestellt, heute schon von Amazon geliefert - und das ohne Expresszuschlag o.ä. SUPER LIEFERZEIT
Werde also gleich mal heute nachmittag beim Rugby entsprechende Fotos machen ;-)
Hoffe, der Akku ist rechtzeitig genug aufgeladen...
Das Handbuch -natürlich auf CD- ist knapp 169 Seiten lange - also mehr als genug zu lesen *hehe*
Test-Fotos etc folgen!

nennen wir einige Digitalkameras

Ist es denn zu glauben?

All die tollen Fotos in meinen Reiseblogs habe ich bisher immer mit einer geliehenen Digitalkamera gemacht – und zwar einer Casio EXILIM EX-S600 , ausgeliehen von 'nem Kumpel der, unfairerweise, 2 hatte ;-)

Unglücklicherweise bekam bei meinem Urlaub auf den Philippinen Kerstin diese Kamera in die Hand (ihre Canon ixus 800 S hatte keinen Akku mehr) und löschte nicht nur das Testbild – sondern gleich die komplette SD-Karte…

Anyway, jetzt ist auf jedenfall mein Kumpel weggezogen und keine Kamera in "kannst du mir die ausleihen" Nähe.

Zeit also, sich mal selbst eine Kamera zuzulegen…

Da ich von der Bildqualität der ixus 800 S mehr als begeistert bin, habe ich entsprechend mal gesucht – und feststellen müssen, dass diese bei den grossen, namhaften Händlern, nicht mehr zu haben ist.

Ergo: Ausweichmodell notwendig.

Nach einigem Hin und Her habe ich die Canon Digital IXUS 990 ISgefunden – vielleicht merkt ja der ein oder andere, dass ich von Digitalkameras keine Ahnung habe ;-)

Jetzt beginnt erstmal der grosse Preisvergleich – wenn alles klappt, gibt's in den kommenden Wochen dann den passenden Erfahrungsbericht.

Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die, nach einem "Theme / Template Update" eine Fehlermeldung bekommen, wenn das Design im WLW aktualisiert werden soll, hier ein kleiner Tipp der bei mir funktioniert hat:

a) entsprechendes Blog ganz normal mit dem gewünschten Template ausstatten
b) im WLW das Blog löschen
c) im WLW das Blog wieder hinzufügen
d) fertig :-)

DE- Nachdem ich die letzten Tage mich ja doch vergleichsweise intensiv mit Themen wie Wordpress, Blogspot.com, eigene Domain etc beschäftigt habe, bin ich auch logischerweise über andere Blogs gestolpert.
Einige davon sahen aber sowas von stark aus... deshalb hier die Frage:

Hoffe, dass das Java so funktioniert, wie es soll - wenn's bei dir nicht klappt, dann schreib doch einfach einen entsprechenden Kommentar :-)

EN- After checking the last few days things like Wordpress, Blogspot.com, own domain etc I also came accross several other blogs which looked awesome.
So, here's now the question:

Mühsam. Aber es geht. Irgendwie

Vielleicht erinnert sich ja der ein oder andere noch an meine früheren Einträge Do-main oder Do-Not-main und doch keine domain , wo ich mit dem Gedanken spielte, das ganze Zeug hier und von meinen Reiseblogs auf 'ne eigene Domain zu verschieben.

Hierzu gibt’s zwischenzeitlich Neuigkeiten… ich bin stolzer (?) Besitzer einer eigenen ~~Domina~~ Domain welche auf den passenden Namen 2centsonline.com hört.

Habe diese zusammen mit dem Paket “Privat PLUS” bei all-inkl.com gemietet (“kaufen” kann man ja nicht sagen, da, wenn keine Zahlung passiert, dass wieder verfällt).
Nach anfänglichen Problemen, u.a. fehlende DNS Bearbeitungsmöglichkeit, falsche Google-Hilfe bzgl. des notwendigen CNAME welchen man eintragen muss, falsches Paket gebucht etc., scheint das auch soweit zu funktionieren.

Zwischenzeitlich verabschiede ich mich von dem Gedanken, das Produkt “Wordpress” zu verwenden.
Gründe hierfür gibt es viele, aber primär liegt’s wohl daran, dass ich bis dato keine Möglichkeit gefunden habe, bei den von blogspot.com importierten Einträgen die YouTube Videos “automatisch” zu korrigieren (wenn hier jemand ‘nen Tipp hat – nur her damit!!). Habe weder Zeit noch Lust, X Videos neu zu verlinken.
Zudem sehe ich keine Möglichkeit, via Wordpress eine (statische) Startseite anzulegen, welche dann auf meine anderen Blogs verlinkt, ohne dass dies in einem HTML-Studiengang endet.
Werde jetzt mal etwas mit CMS Software wie Joomla experimentieren – vielleicht klappt ja dieser Weg

Ich will das doch ganz einfach, ohne viel SchnickSchnackSchnuck *hmpf*
Oder soll ich wirklich richtig Geld investieren und mir bei GoDaddy.com oder anderen ein Profi-Paket für mehrere zig-Euro pro Monat zulegen…?
Immerhin krieg ich bei GoDaddy derzeit richtig gut Rabatt, bis zu 25% und die *.info Domain kostet im ersten Jahr auch nur knappe US-$ 0.90

Anyway, zwischenzeitlich habe ich es geschafft, Blogspot davon zu überzeugen, dass mein Reiseblog auf meinem Server (via FTP) gepflegt wird.
Bekomme zwar beim hochladen immer eine “länger als erwartet” Meldung von Blogspot – aber ich kann erfolgreich via Windows Live Writer (WLW) und “direkt vom Blogspot Interface” Artikel veröffentlichen – und auch lesen ;-)
Jetzt sollte auch das eMail-bloggen kein Problem darstellen…

Aber ich muss mich wohl von der Adresse blogname.2centsonline.com verabschieden und mit 2centsonline.com/blogname/index.html anfreunden.
Bis dato habe ich keine Möglichkeit gefunden, das zu ändern :-(
Vielleicht hilft ja das Forum weiter…

Zudem würde mich doch gerne interessieren, WO die Bilder abgespeichert werden… in meinem FTP Programm finde ich dazu nix, kein Bild, nada…

DNS-Einstellungen für Blogspot.com / Blogger bei all-inkl.com

Wer, wie ich, sein Blogspot.com Blog über seine eigene Domain via FTP (z.B. http://meinFTPblog.com) betreiben möchte, kommt nicht umhin, in den DNS Einstellungen “rumzufummeln”.

Da die DNS Einstellungen bei meinem derzeitigen Anbieter all-inkl.com de-aktiviert waren, mussten diese erst durch den dortigen Support aktiviert werden.
Dies ging echt fix – einfach eine entsprechende eMail an den Support, Problem wegen notwendiger DNS Einstellungen genannt – Antwort eMail mit dem “ist freigeschaltet” innerhalb von 3 Stunden erhalten (und ich habe diese Anfrage abends um 21:40hr abgeschickt!).

Jetzt kommt der Teil, wo die Google Hilfe einem Schrott erzählt – zumindest für den Anbieter all-inkl.com

Gemäss der offiziellen Hilfe muss man bei DNS einen CNAME wie folgt eintragen:
Host Name = www
Value/Destination = ghs.google.com

Wenn man diese Daten im KAS von all-inkl.com im Reiter Tools – DNS Einstellungen einträgt, bekommt man von Blogspot.com jedoch die Fehlermeldung “Neu: DATA-Syntax NICHT KORREKT: ghs.google.com”
RICHTIG muss der DATA-Eintrag jedoch ghs.google.com. (PUNKT) lauten!
Nur wenn man diesen “.” Punkt am Ende von com einträgt, erhält man nicht die DATA-Syntax Meldung.

Hier möchte ich nochmals dem all-inkl.com Support danken, die mich auf diesen Fehler aufmerksam gemacht haben – nach stundenlanger Google Suche hatte ich nämlich hierzu nichts gefunden und hoffe, dem ein oder anderen mit dieser Info schlaflose Nächte zu vermeiden.

FANTASTIC! Around 11:15 am today I posted a question to Zemanta’s support forum – and only a few minutes later a staff member answered.

That’s what I call Customer Support & Service – and I don’t even have to pay any kind of crappy annual fee or similar!

Triond oder Try-not

Unterm Strich gesehen will jeder Blogger ja mit seinem Hobby, seinem Blog, seinen Texten zumindest ein paar Cent nebenher verdienen. Es kann mir keiner erzählen, dass man nur aus “Spass an der Freud” teilweise Stunden vor dem Rechner verbringt, Recherchen betreibt und dies dann, mehr oder minder professionell, veröffentlicht.
So habe ich, nachdem Google Adsense mit rausgeschmissen hat und das Amazon Partnerprogramm zwar wohl funktioniert aber doch bis dato keinerlei Erträge gebracht hat, TRIOND gefunden (wurde von Zemanta… empfohlen…) und habe mich dort auch schon mal registriert.
Enttäuschung Nr.1:
So wie’s aussieht, muss ich dort nochmal Bloggen… dachte eigentlich, dass “die” direkt auf meine vorhandenen Blogeinträge verlinken, und somit auch alte Sachen gelistet werden und ich mir doppelte Arbeit erspare.
Also copy + paste ich einfach mal als kleinen Test meinen Eintrag über das Ende vom George in Stuttgart – und bekomme folgende Fehlermeldung:

Interessant… also werden meine alten Einträge DOCH irgendwie, irgendwo bei denen abgespeichert… stellt sich nur die Frage: wie / wo kann ich das ändern, bearbeiten, was-auch-immer?!?
Google / Bing etc waren bis dato keine grosse Hilfe, hier passende FAQs etc in deutsch zu liefern… sieht wohl nach Try-and-Error aus, welches ich hier anwenden muss…

Gerade will ich diesen Text hier ERST in Triond veröffentlichen – wähle hierzu auch Sprache “German” aus, bekomme jedoch die Fehlermeldung, dass es NICHT in deutscher Sprache geschrieben ist… so ein Quark…
Lösung: erstmal als ENGLISCH deklarieren – mal sehen, was noch alles passiert…

Zemanta and me

A few days back I well... "announced" to check out Zemanta - the new mega-cool blog-tool-feature-addon-helping-thingy.
So far I have tried to write more or less each and every blog-entry in combination w/Zemanta to get a feeling for this tool - even those which I blogged via Clipmarks (mostly the newspaper articles, I'm damn sure you will notice them).

Think it's a good time of the day to give you my personal feedback and, more or less, review of this neat program.

The Bad

It's -so far- only in English. Okay, I can live with that - just insert the search term of your choice in Zemanta's search field and you will find at least some pictures.
A translation in additional languages is from point of view necessary and should be implemented ASAP.

In combination with ScribeFire, the other wonderful Firefox blog addon, it's good to know that you have at least an additional "picture source" - unfortunately the other tools (like links, articles etc) are not working in ScribeFire

Zemanta + NoScript = *yikes*
That's something they have to work on with... don't know, but since NoScript's last update I have to turn it off completely to have a chance to work with Zemanta.

To insert several pictures is good - especially now that you can just drag+drop them around.
But it should be also possible to resize the picture itself!
Have noticed that, due to the fact that my "introduction sentence / paragraph" is mostly quite short, the picture itself takes too much space.
Also, it should be possible to decide the position of the picture - so far it's either on the right OR on the left. What about "the centre"? Or one left, one right?
I'm also faced this a really annoying problem: when I move the picture around AFTER I have inserted it, it duplicates and, even worser, sometimes quadruduplactes itself. Or even more...

The option to insert, more or less, related articles is nice - but it would be even nicer if I could choose the "main sources".
Actually, I don't wanna link to Jane Doe's blog how she was planting a tree in the nowhere of Montana if I write smth bout the rainforest of Singapore or how my neighbour's car was hit by a tree.
IMHO there should be an option where you can choose from - blogs, newspapers / newsstations (CNN, New York Times etc) or a combination of both.

The "my stuff" is ... well... don't mention it, okay?
I informed Zemanta bout all my blogs around but there's no link to any article I wrote - even this one, which refers to Zemanta which I have mentioned clearly in my blog, will not appear / link.

The Flickr combination is also quite disappointing - but only coz they do not recognise my screen-name (which is working, I know it).

Secondly, the option to enter your AMAZON affiliate ID... c'mon - that's useless if it's only working for AMERICAN participants... *sob sob*

The Good

On the positive side I have to mention the option to link directly to websites like Wikipedia etc when you write a corresponding word.
Example: "White House".
Result: This gives me 2 options for linking: either whitehouse.gov or the corresponding Wikipedia entry (ATTENTION: we're still talking here bout the ENGLISH Wikipedia... so, be careful!)

Is Zemanta changing my own way HowTo blog?
Yes - suddenly I insert corresponding links / URLs , pictures and -hopefully- good links to articles other people wrote.

Is it The Future?
I would say... No. Because YOU still have to provide the "input" for Zemanta. It's useless to write only a few words without any combination - there should be at least some kind of context. So, YOU still have to THINK before you type.

Would you recommend Zemanta anyway, even if it's for non-english blogs not so useful (at the moment!)?
Aye. Especially the "insert picture" feature is worth the download!

Would be great to hear YOUR opinion about Zemanta (and the other mentioned tools)!

HEY - TIME OUT... what about the other cool features you haven't mentioned?
The fact that Zemanta is working with Google Mail?
The fact that Zemanta offers tags?
And what about the security issue here?

These are good points - but due to the fact that I don't like to use Zemanta in my Gmail (it's working there only online anyway and I prefer to use a desktop solution to write my eMails) I'm not in the position to review this.
This counts also for the security issue - there are other people who know more bout this kind of subject.
And the tag feature... well... that's easy, isn't it? It's useful - but only if you have no tags / labels so far. Or if you wanna "restart" the the whole tagging for all articles...

Just my 2 cents :-)

Zemanta - a first try

Earlier today I noticed that ScribeFire is working now with Zemanta - a tool which, according to their website, gives you -the blogger- some kind of picture and article support.

Zemanta is also checking "in real-time" the blog entry you're typing at the moment and suggests things like labels, links and corresponding resp. relating articles throughout the web.

There's a similar add-on for WordPress - called Taggaroo, which, as far as I was able to research, is a little bit "smaller in the functions" than Zemanta.

So, let's see this entry as some kind of test for Zemanta.

As you can see it contains already several links & URL, suggested by Zemanta (eg. the link to ScribeFire's website or the referring Wikipedia articles for blogger and website. Also those "related articles" are suggested by this add-on...

Now... let's insert a picture.

Due to the fact that with the text so far the pictures are not really good (c'mon... why do I get a pic of various FireFox logos like the one I show you?!?)

So, here are the "sample words" to activate the picture tool / support...
Singapore, Porsche, Stuttgart, Asia, Europe, World, Spargel, Kabel, Marlboro

Nice - the whole article so far results in 120 possible pictures... but unfortunately most of them are w/out any fitting context to this test...
Looks like you have to write about a real "subject" to get better results.
Secondly, it seems that you can't move the pics (at least here @ blogger.com) free around... they are just placed below like shown...

Will see what the results will be when I start my next travel-blog in October... ;-)
(YES... me is going down to Asia again... and of course it will be blogged as in the past)

Sorry, aber da fass ich mir an den Kopf...

Und dann der Teil, wo gejammert wird, dass kein Internet vorhanden ist... sorry, aber da merkt man, dass man nicht bei ALDI einkauft - da gibt's derzeit noch 'nen USB-Surf (SIM-Lock frei!) für knappe 60 Öre!

Wer unbedingt online sein will, kommt dies - auch ohne DSL-Anschluss bzw. Festnetz-Telefon...

Ich bin mittlerweile viel durch Deutschland und die Welt gekommen. Aber so eine "um 22:59 Uhr ist die Terasse geschlossen" Mentalilät habe ich selten erlebt... Schade.

So, habe mich entschieden, erstmal keine Domain o.ä. käuflich zu erwerben.
Nicht, solange

der Besucherstrom so miserabel ist
ich noch keine Ahnung habe, wie ich Blogger.com dazu bewegen kann, so zu reagieren, wie ich will
es noch nicht möglich ist, die Blogger.com Einträge vernünftig in's Wordpress-Format zu konvertieren.

Habe zwar 'ne "Test-Seite" auf funpic.de zum rumprobieren, aber irgendwie klappt das alles nie so wie ich will... Blogger z.B. krieg ich nicht dazu, 'ne richtige "Hauptseite" anzuzeigen, Wordpress übernimmt meine Blogger-Einträge als "eins"... alles mühsam...

Hab vielleicht doch zuviel "Profi-Wünsche", die ich (alleine) nicht realisieren kann :-(
